My apprenticeship - and the lessons I learned on the way

My apprentice journey was far from how I imagined. When I first started almost 18 months ago, who knew a global pandemic would happen? However, this just proved another (if very major) challenge to overcome. I am in the final stages of my apprenticeship now, and I’d like to take this opportunity to share my biggest learnings and outcomes from being a PR apprentice.

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – no question is too big, too small, or too silly! Asking questions is a key way to learn, it helps to clarify any concerns and allows to develop understanding. As an apprentice I found it incredibly insightful to be surround by those with knowledge and experience, asking my colleagues questions has helped broaden my understanding.

  2. Take all opportunity given to you - the whole aim of an apprenticeship is to offer hands-on learning. I’ve found it extremely as useful to attend industry events, network with peers and other apprentices, and absorb as much experience as possible. Opportunity leads to growth and has enriched my apprenticeship experience, something I wouldn’t have gained from textbook learning.

  3. Plan your time and use all your resources - it is essential to develop exceptional time management skills during the apprenticeship. Not only do you have to balance client deadlines, but you also have to balance coursework and training courses. Planning time effectively ensures that you met all your deadlines and targets. Having a plan and a number of to do lists really helped me manage my time and make the most out of my apprenticeship.
